Artist Statement

Many people have an innate nostalgic connection to objects and materials. Things that you loved to play with or things you did during your childhood things like playing with your favorite stuffed animal or projects you built with a parental figure. All of these unique things about you remain connectors for different generations and even people from different places.

My work seeks to ensnare those pasts by using those objects in the format of jewellery.

Capturing a playful and intuitive creativity that transcends barriers and connects people through their love for exciting and fun things, that is how my jewellery is built. From my experience with objects and materials I seek to interact and evolve my practice to reflect these ideas.

Bibliography

Austin Rowat is a Canadian artist working in metal and mixed media. He is currently pursuing a Bachelor of Fine Arts at the Alberta University of the Arts. He is from rural Alberta which has been an inspiration for pursuing artistic formats including drawing, photography, and painting. His pursuit of jewellery comes from an interest in making objects and a fervent want to make and explore in a tactile way; much like building and creating with toys from childhood. His research and practice in jewellery and metals has begun to explore the facets of jewellery and people, capturing the interactive nature of jewellery. Encouraging people to explore the playfulness that can be coaxed from objects placed on the body.

About My Work

In my prior year of Jewellery and Metals at Alberta University of the Arts I was creating interactive objects and jewellery.

The pandemic has caused a valuable change in how I approached my work in that I have been only working with materials that can be used outside of the school’s studio. This resulted in my current body of work which is based on interactivity, playfulness, nostalgic materials, and intuition.

All of my work is a continuation of last years progress yet with a present mindset to better engage others with my ideas, materials, colours and to hopefully evoke those qualities and also interact with people in a more digitally oriented world.
